Johannesburg – Vicki Momberg, the former real estate agent whose racist rant towards a black police officer was caught on camera, is expected to be sentenced in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Momberg was found guilty of four counts of crimen injuria on November 3 following her rant aimed at Constable David Mkhondo, who was trying to help her after an alleged smash-and-grab incident, which was filmed and shared online and aired on TV news.

She said during sentencing proceedings that she had apologised several times for being racist, but her apologies had fallen on deaf ears.
She also accused prosecutor Yusuf Baba of laughing and intimidating her while she was testifying during arguments in mitigation of sentence. She implies that her apologies fell into deaf ears.

Listeriosis outbreak will not lead to job losses for now.

The outbreak and subsequent spreading of listeriosis contamination from certain meat processing plants in South Africa will likely not lead to job losses in the short term, Dawie Maree, head of marketing and information at FNB Business Agriculture, told Fin24 on Monday.

"At a manufacturing plant most of the jobs are probably permanent and the company should have business contingency plans. In the short term, workers might not go to work, but will probably still receive pay. Companies usually also have insurance for this kind of outbreak," he said.

"However, if they end up having to close the factory all together, that will have an impact. I am not a food scientist, but I don't think this will end up happening. They will probably sterilise the processing facility, keep it under observation, slowly start production again and monitor it."

On the other hand, Maree thinks the huge recall of different products will likely have an impact on the profits of the specific companies involved.

"I don't think it will have a huge impact on SA's gross domestic product (GDP), but rather make a direct impact on the profits of these companies," he said.

Consumers' trust has been damaged. They will think twice before buying processed meat perhaps. We might even see an uptick in demand for fresh meat types. Maybe there will be a switch from processed food to fresh options, but the consumer will have to make that decision. Most of these companies are reputable and will win the consumers' trust back, but it will take some time.

Drought impact on Western Cape economy.

Cape Town - Compared to the previous season, aggregate income after costs in the agriculture sector in the Western Cape is estimated to have declined by up to R5.9bn. This is due to the lower output as a result of the drought.

The impact of the drought on the Western Cape economy cannot be sugar coated and is actually higher than previously anticipated, Western Cape minister of economic opportunities Alan Winde said at a media briefing on Thursday.
"We need the drought to be declared a national disaster and an allocation from the new Cabinet for infrastructure investment in our dams - like Brandvlei and Clanwilliam," said Winde.
"We will continue to invest in smart agriculture. Research is very important. A whole new water economy will come out of this [crisis] and we need to use lots of innovation in agriculture to ensure that the crisis enables us to remain competitive. You cannot compete if you have no products to compete with."

Research indicates that about 30 000 jobs will be lost in the province due to the drought. According to Louw Pienaar, an agricultural economist at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, about 22% of rural jobs in the province relate to agriculture. Many of these jobs are for unskilled or semi-skilled workers. This means these workers will not easily be absorbed by the rest of the economy if they lose their jobs in agriculture.
Pienaar estimates that it will take between eight to ten years for agriculture in the province to recover from the impact of the drought.

Decisions

The clock is ticking, I am not getting any younger. It is in fact every child's dream to become an adult. Being independent is no child's play as you have responsibilities to take decisions that will haunt you for the rest of your life.

My advice to you is that you should start making decisions based on evaluated information
